We Have Laser Therapy!

The West Village Veterinary Hospital is now proud to offer Cold Laser Therapy for our patients!

What is Cold Laser Therapy and How Can it Help Your Pet?

Cold Laser Therapy (CLT) is a non-surgical, non-invasive option for the treatment of pain, inflammation, and wound healing.  If your special companion is afflicted by any ailment that ends in “itis” CLT can help!  Some of the more common illnesses we use it for are arthritis, tendonitis, some forms of gingivitis and dermatitis, soft tissue injuries, and to promote wound healing.  CLT can also be used after most routine surgeries such as spays/neuters to promote faster healing of the surgical site.  Laser therapy relieves pain, reduces swelling, and increases range of motion.  It reduces scar tissue formation, promotes cell growth and repair, and improves metabolic activity in damaged tissue.  It also provides musculoskeletal pain relief, optimizes muscle action, and reduces severe nerve pain.

How Does CLT Work?

During each treatment the CLT device, about the size of a laptop computer, produces an infrared light that is directed towards the area of disease or injury.   The light penetrates the skin and interacts with tissues at the cellular level by drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area.  This improves the tissues ability to eliminate waste products and improves the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane thus promoting healing.  The increased production of cellular energy, called ATP, leads to multiple benefits related to cellular function and health.

What Happens During a Treatment?

Depending on the site of interest, most CLT treatments take several minutes per location.  The  technician performing  the treatment uses a hand-held probe to apply  the infrared light (energy) to the target area.  The hair does not need to shaved and sedation is not necessary.  The therapy itself releases endorphins and most animals will feel relaxed.  Even though many pet owners report results even after one treatment, the benefits of CLT are cumulative in nature and thus show best results after a series of planned treatments.

Is Laser Therapy Safe?

The doses of laser energy are therapeutic and safe.  We take precautions by providing specialized eyewear to protect the eyes of the patient, viewer, and operator.
